about

Mark Z Alvarez is a prize-winning contemporary photographer. Originally from East London, Mark has made Cambridge his home for twenty five years and is a very active and established member of its vibrant and thriving arts community.

Mark has always been passionate about the arts, whether it’s music, theatre, literature, painting or photography. He was in three operas at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, as a child. However, his primary passion has always been photography, with early influences being Ansell Adams, Robert Doisneau and Henri Cartier Bresson.

Mark travels extensively to capture atmospheric, evocative, dramatic and thought-provoking images. He uses both black and white and long exposure photography, often at dawn, to capture an ethereal light. His work sits at the intersection of fine art landscape photography and emotional storytelling, often evoking tranquillity, melancholy, or a sense of stepping into an alternate reality. His preferred use of monochrome helps to strip scenes down to their emotional and structural essence.

Mark is also a management team member of Cambridge Open Studios, a prestigious organisation founded over fifty years ago that represents over five hundred artists and makers.

The limited edition prints are printed on Hahnemuhle Photo Rag 308 Fine Art photo paper, and are signed and numbered.

The gallery features some of Mark's most popular work but please contact him about recent projects or commissions.
